BJP Nominates Biplab Deb for Rajya Sabha By-Poll in Tripura

AGARTALA: The BJP has nominated Biplab Kumar Deb, the former Chief Minister of Tripura who resigned from his Chief Ministerial post earlier this year in May to the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in September 22.

Biplab Deb has been nominated for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Tripura where he will be contesting against Left-Front candidate Bhanulal Saha who is backed by CPI(M) in the upper house election.

Arun Singh, BJP's national General Secretary (Headquarters), announced on Friday that Deb had been nominated for the Rajya Sabha elections by the Central Election Committee (CEC).

Expressing his heartfelt gratitude to BJP's senior leadership, Deb tweeted: "Gratitude to PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, President Shri J P Nadda Ji and Home Minister Amit Shah Ji for nominating me as a BJP candidate for Rajya Sabha MP from Tripura. I am committed to work for the development and welfare of Tripura and it's people."

Deb's cake got a cherry on top as earlier on Friday he was also named Haryana State's Observer for the party.

Deb's berth is already confirmed as BJP and its ally in Tripura, Tripura Indigenous People's Front of Tripura(TIPFT) together have 44 MLAs in the 60 member Tripura Assembly. The former ruling party in Tripura, CPI(M) only has 15 MLAs and with the lone congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman they together will contest in the election with only 16 seats which means they are fighting a losing battle.

The Election Commission issued the statutory notification on Monday for the September 22 elections, and counting of votes would take place on the same day itself.
